New outboard engines, supplied
and fitted
Ferry Marine sells new outboard engines from 2.5hp to 425hp and Yanmar inboard diesels up to 640hp, and fits them properly — rigged, propped, wired and correctly set up on your boat, not handed to you in a crate. We're marine engineers in Livingston, twenty minutes from Edinburgh, we've been doing this since 1991.

- 2.5hp to 20hp — tenders, dinghies, auxiliaries and the get-you-home engine on a yacht
- 25hp to 60hp — small day boats, loch and river work, lightweight ribs
- 75hp to 150hp — family boats, fishing boats, and working and medium-sized ribs
- 175hp to 425hp — bigger ribs, sportsboats and offshore hulls, single or twin
New outboard motors for sale in every one of those bands. We keep the popular sizes in stock; anything else is usually a week to ten days. Tell us the hull and how you use it and we'll tell you what it actually needs — which is not always the biggest engine that will bolt on the back.
Anyone can sell you an engine.
Fitting it is the job.
A new outboard isn't a box you bolt on. The outboard engine installation is a crucial part of the sale. Every engine we supply is:
Matched to the boat
Weight, transom height, shaft length, power the hull can actually use
Propped properly
Pitch and diameter chosen for how you actually load the boat, then checked against wide-open-throttle rpm. Get the prop wrong and a good engine feels gutless, drinks fuel and wears its gearbox out early. It's the cheapest part of the job to get right and the most common one to get wrong.
Rigged in full
Controls, steering, gauges, wiring, fuel system, battery and charging
Set up and handed over
We run it, check it over and show you how it works before you take it away, whether that's a straightforward installation or a full electronics network built around the new engine
Registered and warrantied
Manufacturer warranty registered on the day, serviced here afterwards
Console work, gauges and electronics are done in the same workshop, so a repower and a helm refit can happen at the same time. Custom acrylic dashboards are our speciality.
Repowering an older boat
Most weeks something arrives with a tired engine on the back of a hull that has years left in it. Repowering is usually the better spend: a new engine on a sound boat costs a fraction of a new boat, and it fixes the thing that was actually wrong.
What it involves depends on what's there now. A like-for-like swap can be straightforward. Going from two-stroke to four-stroke, or up in horsepower, usually means new controls, new gauges and sometimes a new battery and fuel setup — and on an older boat it's worth us looking at the transom itself before anything else gets ordered.
We'll look at the boat and tell you honestly whether it's worth repowering. Sometimes the answer is no.
Depending on its age and condition, we may take the old engine in part-exchange against the new one. If it's past that, we'll dispose of it responsibly rather than leave it with you.

The marine engines we supply
We specialise in three makes — the ones we sell new, fit ourselves and know inside out. Any of them will do the job very well; it comes down to the boat, the budget and what you're used to. Not sure? Phone us. Five minutes on the phone saves a lot of reading.
Why buy the engine from the people fitting it
You can find a new outboard engine for sale cheaper elsewhere. What you can't buy elsewhere is somebody who'll stand behind it.
We sell new engines only, and we fit the engines we sell. No used stock, no parts counter — parts get fitted as part of a job rather than sold over it — and we don't take on fitting an engine somebody else supplied.
Servicing is different: we'll service and repair any make, wherever you bought it. But if what you're after is a second-hand engine or a fitting-only job, we're not the right shop, and we'd rather say so now than waste your afternoon.
Five-year warranty, registered properly.
Five years on both Suzuki and Mercury for leisure use, registered by us on the day the engine is handed over. Commercial operators get two years or 1,000 hours, whichever comes first. A private sale or a grey import often isn't covered at all.
One place responsible.
We sold it and we fitted it, so if something isn't right there's nobody in the middle to blame.
Serviced where it was fitted.
The workshop that rigged it knows the boat, and the service history stays in one place — which matters when you sell.
Our marine workshop is in Livingston
The workshop is in Livingston, EH54 — straight off the M8, 20 minutes from Edinburgh. Most of our work comes from across central Scotland, but people tow from Fife, the west coast, the Borders and the north of England for a repower, because it's a job worth doing once and doing properly.
Private boats come to the workshop. If you run boats for a living — a marina, a sailing school, a tour or charter operator, a club with a fleet — talk to us about working round your season instead of ours.
Tell us about your boat !
Give us the boat — make, length, what's on the back of it now, and how you use it. We'll come back with what we'd fit and what it costs.
